It’s frustrating when a radiator is warm at the top but cold underneath. In Edinburgh’s old tenement flats or Lothians homes, this usually means sludge or debris is blocking the flow of hot water. Hard water minerals (limescale) and rust can settle at the bottom of the radiator. Sometimes a partly closed radiator valve can also cause poor flow.

Simple checks

  • Valves: Ensure both radiator valves are open. Turn the thermostatic valve (if fitted) fully on and make sure the lockshield valve isn’t fully closed.

  • Bleed: Open the bleed valve at the top of the radiator to let out air. (Trapped air typically causes cold spots at the top, not the bottom.)

DIY fixes

  • Drain & flush: Turn off the heating, isolate the radiator by closing its valves, and drain it into a bucket. Take the radiator outside and attach a hose to one end to flush it until the water runs clear.

  • Use a cleaner: A central heating chemical cleaner or inhibitor (available in hardware stores) can help dissolve sludge inside radiators. Follow the product instructions carefully.
